How do we reduce immediate needs?

Anticipating next year’s humanitarian needs and addressing solutions to making lasting change

Tens of millions of people in 42 countries will need assistance in 2019, according to Mark Lowcock, the United Nations under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, writes in a recent editorial for Thomson Reuters Foundation News.

He offers four suggestions for how we need to “work differently” to reduce immediate need:

  • revamp humanitarian financing to improve its efficiency
  • expand the funding pool
  • shift from response to prevention and early action to prevent large-scale crises
  • tackle the root causes of vulnerability and instability

At Christian Children’s Fund of Canada, we address those ideas, with a focus on tackling root issues. For example, providing access to education and training is a key ingredient in empowering communities to reject child labour and child marriage.
