Empowering African girls through technology

We need more women in male-dominated fields

The secretary general attended the African Union Summit in Ethiopia where he met girls who are part of the African Girls Can Code Initiative, which runs until 2022. “We need more girls to take technology courses,” said Guterres. “This is absolutely crucial. If girls and women are not more involved in technology professions, power relations will remain very male-dominated.”

According to the United Nations, there are many reasons to support women in science and technology jobs:

  1. women make up less than 30 percent of researchers worldwide
  2. access to tech help’s empower women’s economic development
  3. tech can benefit women’s health

At Christian Children’s Fund of Canada, we promote equality for girls, so they can reach their potential. In India, we’re joining with Tata Trusts and Google India to fund a project, which involves training women on digital devices.

About Christian Children’s Fund of Canada:

Christian Children’s Fund of Canada works globally to support children and youth who dream of a better world. For nearly 60 years, we’ve brought together diverse people and partnerships, driven by a common belief: education extends beyond the walls of a classroom and is the most powerful tool children can use to change their world. We focus on breaking barriers preventing access to inclusive, quality education for all, especially girls.
